Overview

mRNA-1944 is an investigational therapeutic developed by Moderna that encodes a fully human IgG monoclonal antibody (CHKV-24) targeting the chikungunya virus. Unlike traditional monoclonal antibodies produced in cell culture and administered as proteins, mRNA-1944 uses messenger RNA to instruct the body’s cells to produce the anti-chikungunya antibody directly. The drug consists of two separate mRNAs—one for each chain of the IgG molecule—delivered via Moderna’s proprietary lipid nanoparticle technology. This approach enables rapid and dose-dependent production of functional antibodies in vivo. In clinical studies, administration of mRNA-1944 led to detectable and therapeutically relevant levels of neutralizing antibodies against chikungunya virus in healthy adults[3][6][7]. The program was supported by DARPA funding but has since been discontinued after Phase 1 trials[2].
