Overview

mRNA-6231 is an investigational, lipid nanoparticle–encapsulated, mRNA-based therapy developed by Moderna. It encodes a modified human interleukin 2 (IL-2) mutein fused to human serum albumin (HSA-IL2m), designed for subcutaneous administration. The drug’s mechanism of action centers on the preferential expansion of regulatory T cells (Tregs) through the expression of this engineered IL-2 protein. By selectively expanding Tregs, mRNA‑6231 aimed to restore immune homeostasis and was being developed for autoimmune diseases. The program reached Phase 1 clinical trials but was discontinued following early clinical data and changes in the competitive landscape[1][3][5][8].
