mRNA SARS-CoV-2 booster vaccine refers to an mRNA-based vaccination strategy and clinical research program developed and evaluated by ANRS Maladies Infectieuses Emergentes (the French Agency for Research on Emerging Infectious Diseases). The program is most notably associated with the COVIBOOST (ANRS 0001S) clinical trial, which investigated the safety and immunogenicity of mRNA vaccine boosters in individuals previously immunized with different primary series. The vaccine works by introducing nucleoside-modified mRNA encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles into host cells, which then translate the mRNA into the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. This protein acts as an antigen, stimulating the production of neutralizing antibodies and activating T-cell responses to provide protection against COVID-19. The research focuses on optimizing booster regimens, including the use of fractional doses and heterologous boosting strategies to enhance waning immunity and broaden protection against emerging variants.
