Overview

MRO-002 is an experimental small molecule therapy developed as a highly selective antagonist of the GPR17 receptor. Its primary mechanism is to promote remyelination by inhibiting GPR17, a receptor that acts as a brake on the maturation of oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) into fully functional oligodendrocytes, which are responsible for producing myelin in the central nervous system. By blocking GPR17, MRO-002 enhances OPC maturation and boosts new myelin production, potentially repairing damaged myelin sheaths in neurodegenerative diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS). Preclinical studies have shown that MRO-002 significantly increases oligodendrocyte maturation and remyelination in animal models of demyelination. The drug is being advanced by Myrobalan Therapeutics with support from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society for further preclinical development targeting progressive forms of MS[6][8].
