MRS7787 is a novel, light-activated small molecule drug developed as a photopharmaceutical for the treatment of psoriasis and potentially other inflammatory conditions. It is derived from piclidenoson and functions as a selective agonist of the adenosine A3 receptor (A3R). The compound contains a diazocine photochrome, which allows it to exist in two rapidly interconvertible isomeric forms—Z-MRS7787 (inactive) and E-MRS7787 (active). In its Z configuration, MRS7787 remains inactive in the dark or under green light; upon exposure to blue light, it switches to the E configuration, selectively activating A3R at targeted sites. This activation leads to an anti-inflammatory effect by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokine production from immune cells. The photoswitchable nature of MRS7787 enables precise spatial and temporal control over its pharmacological activity, minimizing systemic side effects compared to conventional immunomodulatory therapies. Preclinical studies have demonstrated efficacy in animal models of psoriasis[1][4][5][6][9].
