MRT5500 is an mRNA-based vaccine candidate originally developed by Translate Bio in collaboration with Sanofi Pasteur for the prevention of COVID-19. The vaccine utilizes Translate Bio's proprietary MRT™ platform to deliver messenger RNA encoding a modified version of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. Encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles, the mRNA instructs host cells to produce the viral antigen, thereby eliciting a targeted immune response. Although MRT5500 demonstrated positive safety and immunogenicity results in Phase 1/2 clinical trials, Sanofi announced in September 2021 that it would discontinue the program. The decision was strategic, as Sanofi opted to pivot its resources toward developing next-generation mRNA vaccines using modified mRNA technology rather than the unmodified mRNA approach used for MRT5500.
