MRX-2 (formerly CLS-2) is a synthetic, multi-functional anti-inflammatory (MFAI) small molecule that was developed by Celsus Therapeutics for the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis. As an MFAIs, MRX-2 is designed to inhibit the enzyme phospholipase A2 (PLA2), which is responsible for the release of arachidonic acid from cell membranes, thereby blocking the production of various pro-inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes. This mechanism allows MRX-2 to address multiple pathways of inflammation simultaneously, potentially offering a broader therapeutic effect than single-target agents. The drug was formulated as a topical ophthalmic solution and reached Phase 2 clinical development. However, following the merger of Celsus Therapeutics with Akari Therapeutics in 2015, the development of the MFAIs platform was discontinued to focus on Akari's lead complement inhibitor, nomacopan.
