MRx0029 is a live biotherapeutic product (LBP) consisting of a single strain of bacteria, Megasphaera massiliensis, which is naturally found in the healthy human gut. Developed by 4D pharma, it is an oral capsule formulation intended for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. Preclinical studies have shown that MRx0029 can reduce neuroinflammation, protect neurons from oxidative stress-induced death, improve gut barrier integrity, and promote the differentiation and survival of dopamine-producing neurons. The therapeutic rationale is based on modulating the gut-brain axis to address the underlying pathology of neurodegeneration. A Phase I clinical trial was planned to evaluate its safety and tolerability in patients with Parkinson's disease. However, the developer, 4D pharma, went into administration in June 2022, and its assets were later acquired by Armata Pharmaceuticals in March 2023, leaving the current development status of MRx0029 uncertain.
