Drug intelligence / Profile preview
MRx0029 + MRx0005 is a combination of two live biotherapeutic products (LBPs) developed by 4D pharma plc for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, specifically Parkinson's disease. The combination consists of two distinct bacterial strains: MRx0005, a specific strain of *Bacteroides xylanisolvens*, and MRx0029, a strain of *Megasphaera massiliensis*. These strains were selected from the human gut microbiome for their potential to modulate the gut-brain axis. The therapeutic rationale is based on the ability of these bacteria to reduce neuroinflammation and provide neuroprotection by influencing systemic immune responses and metabolic pathways that communicate with the central nervous system. Preclinical studies demonstrated that the combination could protect against the loss of dopaminergic neurons and reduce the aggregation of alpha-synuclein, a hallmark of Parkinson's pathology. A Phase 1 clinical trial was initiated to evaluate the safety and tolerability of the combination in patients with Parkinson's disease.
