The MSC Fistula Plug is an investigational autologous cell therapy developed by the Mayo Clinic for the treatment of persistent post-surgical gastrointestinal fistulas and leaks. The product consists of approximately 20 million autologous mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) derived from the patient's own subcutaneous adipose tissue. These cells are expanded in culture and then seeded onto a Gore Bio-A Fistula Plug, which is a bioabsorbable matrix scaffold. The therapy is designed to be surgically implanted into the fistula tract, where the MSCs utilize their regenerative, anti-inflammatory, and tissue-repair properties to promote fistula closure. This approach is specifically targeted at refractory cases that have failed to respond to standard radiologic, endoscopic, or surgical treatments.
