Overview

MSC-IFNα is an investigational cell therapy consisting of mesenchymal stromal (or stem) cells (MSCs) genetically engineered to express and secrete interferon alpha (IFN-α). The therapy leverages the tumor-homing properties of MSCs to deliver sustained local concentrations of IFN-α directly within the tumor microenvironment. Interferon alpha is a type I interferon cytokine with potent immunomodulatory and antitumor effects. Preclinical studies have shown that administration of MSCs producing IFN-α can suppress tumor growth, increase apoptosis in cancer cells, reduce proliferation and angiogenesis in tumors, and enhance infiltration and activation of cytotoxic CD8+ T cells via upregulation of chemokines such as CXCL10. This approach aims to overcome limitations associated with systemic delivery of recombinant cytokines by providing targeted delivery while minimizing systemic toxicity. The primary indication under investigation is advanced or metastatic solid tumors including melanoma[2][4].
