Overview

MSC-IFNB is an investigational allogeneic cell and gene therapy consisting of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) genetically modified to express and secrete human interferon-beta (IFNB). Developed by researchers at MD Anderson Cancer Center, the therapy utilizes the innate ability of MSCs to home to and engraft within tumor stroma. By delivering a plasmid encoding IFNB via electroporation, the MSCs act as localized bioreactors that produce the cytokine directly at the tumor site. This targeted delivery is intended to maximize the anti-proliferative and immunomodulatory effects of IFNB—such as the recruitment of immune cells and direct induction of tumor cell death—while avoiding the systemic toxicities associated with high-dose recombinant interferon. Clinical evaluation has focused on the intraperitoneal administration of MSC-IFNB for patients with advanced, refractory epithelial ovarian cancer.
