MSC-NIS is an investigational cell and gene therapy consisting of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) genetically engineered to express the sodium/iodide symporter (NIS, also known as SLC5A5). MSCs possess inherent tumor-homing properties, allowing them to selectively migrate and engraft within the tumor microenvironment. Once localized at the tumor site, the engineered MSCs express NIS, which actively transports and concentrates administered radionuclides, such as Iodine-131 ($^{131}\text{I}$) or Technetium-99m ($^{99\text{m}}\text{Tc}$), into the tumor. This enables both high-resolution radionuclide imaging (SPECT/PET) to track cell biodistribution and targeted radiotherapy of the surrounding tumor tissue via the radioactive bystander (crossfire) effect, while minimizing systemic toxicity to non-target organs.
