MT2004 is an orally bioavailable small molecule P2X7 receptor antagonist developed by Xi'an Aolitai Pharmaceutical Technology and Xi'an Biocare Pharma. The P2X7 receptor is a trimeric ligand-gated ion channel that is activated by extracellular ATP, leading to the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome and the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and interleukin-18 (IL-18). By selectively inhibiting P2X7, MT2004 aims to suppress the inflammatory cascade and subsequent hepatocyte death in patients with drug-induced liver injury (DILI), particularly those with cholestatic or mixed patterns of injury. The drug is currently being evaluated in Phase II clinical trials in China to assess its safety and efficacy in DILI subjects.
