MTBVAC PRIME is a live-attenuated vaccine candidate for tuberculosis (TB) designed specifically for use in newborns. It is based on a genetically modified clinical isolate of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Euro-American lineage), with two independent nonreverting deletion mutations in the virulence genes phoP and fadD26. This vaccine aims to stimulate immune responses that mimic natural TB infection without causing disease, and it contains the full set of antigenic targets present in virulent M. tuberculosis, including T cell epitopes absent in BCG (the current standard TB vaccine). The development was led by Dr. Carlos Martín Montañés at the University of Zaragoza and Brigitte Gicquel at Institut Pasteur[2][4][5].
