MTC001 is an autologous cell therapy developed by Metcela Inc. for the treatment of chronic heart failure. The therapy utilizes VCAM-1-positive Cardiac Fibroblasts (VCF), which are patient-derived (autologous) and cardiac-derived (homologous) cells. These fibroblasts are designed to re-establish a favorable microenvironment within damaged heart tissues, inducing lymphangiogenesis and enhancing the proliferation of cardiomyocytes to promote tissue regeneration. MTC001 is administered via a specialized, minimally invasive catheter delivery system equipped with a high-functionality injection needle. Although a Phase I clinical trial was initiated at the University of Tsukuba Hospital to evaluate the safety of MTC001 in patients with chronic ischemic heart failure, Metcela reported that development for adult heart failure was halted in 2024.
