Overview

MTS-107 is an investigational sustained-release gel formulation of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) designed for intratympanic administration. Developed by the Japanese company MTS Co., Ltd., it is primarily targeted at treating sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). The product utilizes a thermosensitive hydrogel technology that allows the medication to be injected as a liquid into the middle ear, where it subsequently solidifies into a gel at body temperature. This gel serves as a reservoir, providing a sustained release of NAC across the round window membrane into the cochlea. NAC acts as a potent antioxidant and a precursor to glutathione, thereby neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and enhancing the ear's natural defense mechanisms against oxidative stress, which is believed to be a major contributor to hair cell damage and hearing loss.
