MTX-ATMPs is an experimental therapeutic platform consisting of methotrexate (MTX) packaged within autologous tumor-derived microparticles (ATMPs). Developed by researchers at Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, this therapy is specifically designed to treat malignant pleural effusion (MPE), particularly in patients with lung cancer. The microparticles are derived from the patient's own tumor cells found in the pleural fluid, making them highly biocompatible and capable of targeting malignant cells. Once administered via intrapleural infusion, the MTX-ATMPs work through a dual mechanism: the methotrexate directly induces tumor cell death by inhibiting dihydrofolate reductase, while the tumor-derived microparticles stimulate an immune response against the cancer cells. Clinical studies have demonstrated high objective response rates and a favorable safety profile compared to traditional intrapleural chemotherapy like cisplatin.
