Drug intelligence / Profile preview
MTX-LDE is a novel formulation of methotrexate encapsulated in cholesterol-rich, non-protein lipid core nanoparticles (LDE) that mimic the structure of low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Developed by the University of Sao Paulo General Hospital, this drug is being investigated for the treatment of mild COVID-19. The LDE delivery system is designed to target tissues with high LDL receptor expression—often sites of intense inflammation—thereby increasing drug uptake at the target site while potentially reducing systemic toxicity. Methotrexate acts as an anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive agent by inhibiting dihydrofolate reductase and other enzymes, which in the context of COVID-19, aims to modulate the hyperinflammatory response.
