Drug intelligence / Profile preview
MTX-LDE is an investigational nanomedicine formulation consisting of methotrexate (MTX) incorporated into lipid core nanoparticles (LDE) that mimic the structure of low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Developed by researchers at the University of São Paulo General Hospital, the formulation is designed to target inflammatory sites by binding to LDL receptors, which are often overexpressed in inflamed tissues. Methotrexate, the active ingredient, is a folate analogue that inhibits dihydrofolate reductase, providing anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects. By using the LDE delivery system, the drug aims to enhance cellular uptake and reduce the systemic toxicity typically associated with methotrexate. It has been evaluated in Phase 1/2 clinical trials for the treatment of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 to mitigate the associated inflammatory response.
