It acts as an agonist of the Triggering Receptor Expressed on Myeloid cells 2 (TREM2). The drug is being advanced for the potential treatment of early Alzheimer's disease (AD). Its mechanism of action involves activating TREM2, which leads to the formation and stabilization of the TREM2/DAP12 receptor complex. This process is crucial for downstream signaling and microglial activation, ultimately reprogramming microglia to a protective state. This reprogramming helps to reduce neurotoxic beta-amyloid burden and enhances the microglial function of clearing misfolded proteins and cellular debris, thereby aiming to slow or stop the progression of neurodegeneration.
