Overview

MUC-1 CAR T cells are an immunotherapy consisting of autologous T cells genetically modified to express a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) specific for Mucin 1 (MUC1). MUC1 is a heavily glycosylated protein that is frequently overexpressed and loses its apical polarization in various adenocarcinomas, making it a viable target for CAR-T therapy in solid tumors. Upon binding to MUC1 on the tumor cell surface, the CAR-T cells undergo activation, proliferation, and exert cytotoxic effects against the cancer cells. Clinical trials, primarily conducted in China, are currently evaluating these therapies in patients with advanced or recurrent solid tumors, including pancreatic and breast cancers.
