Overview

MUC1 antigenic peptides are short amino acid sequences derived from the Mucin 1 (MUC1) protein, a heavily glycosylated transmembrane protein that is frequently overexpressed and aberrantly glycosylated in various epithelial cancers, including breast, lung, and pancreatic cancer. These peptides are designed to be presented by Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) molecules on the surface of antigen-presenting cells to stimulate a specific immune response, particularly by cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs), against tumor cells expressing MUC1. Various formulations, including those targeting the variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) region, have been investigated in clinical trials as therapeutic cancer vaccines, often in combination with adjuvants or other immunomodulators to enhance potency.
