Overview

This is a peptide-based cancer vaccine developed by the University of Pittsburgh for the treatment of pancreatic cancer. The vaccine consists of a 100-amino acid synthetic peptide representing five 20-amino acid tandem repeats of the MUC1 protein, which is frequently overexpressed and hypoglycosylated in pancreatic tumors. To enhance immunogenicity, the peptide is formulated with the SB-AS2 adjuvant system, a combination of monophosphoryl lipid A (MPL) and the saponin QS-21. In Phase I clinical trials, the vaccine was evaluated for its safety and ability to elicit MUC1-specific T-cell and antibody responses in patients with resected or locally advanced pancreatic cancer.
