MUC1-targeted vaccine

The MUC1-targeted vaccine is an experimental vaccine developed by Olivera Finn, PhD, and colleagues at the University of Pittsburgh. It is designed to prevent colorectal cancer by training the patient's immune system to recognize and respond to a unique pattern of sugar molecules bound to the MUC1 protein, which is found on precancerous and cancerous cells. This allows the immune system to eradicate these cells before they can form adenomas or cancerous tumors, while sparing healthy cells. The vaccine has been tested in clinical trials for colorectal cancer prevention and is also being investigated for breast cancer prevention.
