Overview

MUC13-SPION is a targeted nanotheranostic agent consisting of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) functionalized with antibodies or ligands specific to Mucin 13 (MUC13). MUC13 is a transmembrane glycoprotein highly overexpressed in various epithelial cancers, particularly pancreatic and colorectal cancers, while showing minimal expression in normal tissues. The SPION core serves as a high-performance contrast agent for T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), while the MUC13 targeting moiety ensures selective accumulation in tumor cells. Beyond diagnostic imaging, these nanoparticles can be utilized for targeted drug delivery or magnetic hyperthermia therapy. Development is primarily academic, notably associated with research into pancreatic cancer detection and treatment.
