Mucinex with Codeine

Mucinex with Codeine is an extended-release bi-layer tablet formulation containing guaifenesin and codeine phosphate. It was developed by Adams Respiratory Therapeutics (later acquired by Reckitt Benckiser) for the prescription treatment of cough associated with the common cold, inhaled irritants, and stable chronic bronchitis. The drug combines the expectorant properties of guaifenesin, which thins bronchial secretions and increases the volume of airway fluid, with the antitussive properties of codeine phosphate, an opioid agonist that acts on the medullary cough center. Despite its development and submission for review, the formulation was not approved by the FDA.
