Overview

Mucoid exopolysaccharide P. aeruginosa immune globulin (MEP IGIV) is an investigational intravenous immunoglobulin (IGIV) biologic developed for the treatment of cystic fibrosis (CF). It specifically targets patients colonized with mucoid strains of *Pseudomonas aeruginosa*. The drug consists of a human immunoglobulin preparation enriched with high titers of opsonic antibodies directed against the mucoid exopolysaccharide (MEP), or alginate, which forms the protective biofilm/capsule of the bacteria. The mechanism of action involves the binding of these antibodies to the MEP capsule, which promotes complement deposition and subsequent opsonophagocytic killing by host immune cells—a defense mechanism that CF patients typically fail to develop naturally against mucoid strains. It has been evaluated in Phase II clinical trials sponsored by the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR).
