Mucopolysaccharide polysulphate (MPS) is a topical medication, a complex carbohydrate polymer, used for its anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic, and tissue-regenerating properties. It is similar to naturally occurring mucopolysaccharides found in the skin. MPS is utilized in the treatment of various conditions including xerosis in atopic dermatitis, bruises, superficial thrombophlebitis, varicose veins, and to improve scar formation. Its mechanism of action involves enhancing blood circulation, preventing blood clot formation by inhibiting thrombin and factor Xa, reducing inflammation and swelling, and promoting tissue healing. In the context of skin barrier function, it repairs tight junction dysfunction by increasing the expression of claudin-1 and zonula occludens-1, and inactivating the extracellular signal-regulated kinase signaling pathway. It also contributes to skin hydration and elasticity by stimulating endogenous hyaluronate synthesis and inhibits collagen fiber hyperplasia and type I collagen expression in scar formation.
