Mucosal influenza vaccines are a class of prophylactic agents designed to elicit immune responses at the mucosal surfaces where the influenza virus typically enters the body, such as the respiratory or gastrointestinal tract. Unlike traditional injectable vaccines that primarily stimulate systemic IgG antibodies, mucosal vaccines are engineered to induce local secretory IgA (sIgA) and cellular immune responses in addition to systemic immunity. This dual-layered protection can potentially block viral entry and shedding more effectively, thereby reducing transmission.
