Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**MukoCell** is an autologous tissue-engineered medicinal product (ATMP) designed for the surgical reconstruction of the urethra, specifically for patients suffering from **urethral strictures** or **lichen sclerosus**. The therapy involves a minimally invasive biopsy of the patient’s own buccal mucosa (approximately 0.5 cm²), from which keratinocytes and fibroblasts are isolated and expanded *in vitro* in a specialized laboratory. These cells are then seeded onto a biodegradable scaffold—traditionally described in early development and regulatory filings as a **collagen-polylactoglycolide (PLGA)** matrix, though often referred to as a porcine collagen matrix in later iterations. The resulting graft mimics the histological structure of the natural urethral lining and is surgically implanted to replace the narrowed or damaged segment of the urethra. By utilizing a patient's own cells, MukoCell eliminates the risk of immunological rejection and significantly reduces the donor-site morbidity associated with traditional free buccal mucosa grafts, which require much larger tissue harvests.
