MUL001 is an investigational live-attenuated bacterial therapy being developed by Mulberry Biotherapeutics for the treatment of neurofibromatosis type 2-related schwannomatosis (NF2-SWN) and other slow-growing tumors. The active ingredient is an attenuated strain of Salmonella Typhimurium, which is administered via image-guided intratumoral injection directly into tumors. The therapy works through immune activation within hypoxic tumor microenvironments, with the bacteria selectively targeting and modulating the tumor microenvironment. MUL001 is based on research from Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital and is licensed exclusively from MGH. The company is currently in the IND-enabling phase of development and has received orphan drug designation in both the US and Europe. Beyond NF2-SWN, the platform is being evaluated for additional indications including NF1-associated neurofibromas, non-NF2 schwannomatosis, and meningioma.
