Mulberry fruit extract refers to extracts derived from the fruit of various Morus species, most commonly Morus alba (white mulberry) and Morus nigra (black mulberry). The extract contains numerous bioactive compounds such as anthocyanins (especially cyanidin-3-glucoside), flavonoids, polyphenols, carotenoids, pectin, minerals (notably potassium, calcium, and magnesium), and essential fatty acids like linoleic acid and palmitic acid[1][2][4][6]. Mulberry fruit extract has demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, lipid-lowering, hepatoprotective, and potential anticancer effects in vitro and animal studies[1][3][5]. The mechanisms include inhibition of cytochrome P450 3A activity, organic anion transporting polypeptide B (OATP-B) inhibition, antioxidant activity (free radical scavenging), and possible modulation of apoptotic and metabolic pathways[1]. It is used in traditional medicine and as a dietary supplement for supporting cardiovascular health, blood sugar regulation, and as an antioxidant or functional food ingredient[5][7]. Clinical data remain limited and its efficacy has not been conclusively established in controlled human studies[5][7].
