Mulberry leaf extract is derived from the leaves of the Morus alba (white mulberry) plant. It is rich in polyphenols and other bioactive compounds such as 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ), gibberellic acid, flavonoids, and phenolic acids[3][6][9]. Traditionally used in Chinese medicine for diabetes and respiratory ailments[2], it has gained popularity as a dietary supplement for its potential to lower blood sugar by inhibiting carbohydrate-digesting enzymes like alpha-glucosidase[5]. This slows glucose absorption after meals. Mulberry leaf extract also exhibits antioxidant and antimutagenic properties that may protect against oxidative stress and genetic damage—effects being explored as adjuvant support during cancer radiotherapy[5]. Additional research suggests possible benefits for cholesterol reduction and cardiovascular health; however, robust clinical evidence remains limited[3][4].
