Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Multi-Characteristic Opsin** is an investigational optogenetic gene-therapy payload being developed for non-opioid treatment of chronic pain. The program uses non-viral, nano-enhanced optical delivery of DNA encoding MCO to selectively sensitize pain-blocking inhibitory neurons in the spinal cord and related pain pathways. Following expression, red LED light activates the light-sensitive opsin, depolarizing targeted inhibitory neurons to suppress pain signaling while avoiding nonspecific electrical stimulation of surrounding neurons. Delivery approaches described publicly use functionalized gold nanorods, low-power laser-mediated gene delivery, and cell-selective promoters.
