Overview

Multi-epitope mRNA vaccine (HIV-1) refers to a class of investigational mRNA-based vaccines designed to target multiple conserved epitopes of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). These vaccines typically encode a tandem array of cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL), helper T lymphocyte (HTL), and/or B-cell epitopes derived from key HIV-1 proteins such as gp120, Gag, or Nef. By utilizing optimized flanking sequences to enhance antigen processing and MHC class I presentation, these vaccines aim to elicit robust, multifunctional CD8+ T-cell and humoral immune responses. Development of these candidates is being explored by various academic and research institutions, including the National Institutes of Biomedical Innovation, Health and Nutrition (NIBIOHN) and the University of Bordeaux, as a potential therapeutic or preventive strategy to achieve a functional cure for HIV-1.
