Overview

This multi-strain probiotic intervention, studied by researchers at the University of Calgary, is a combination of *Bifidobacterium* and *Lacticaseibacillus* species designed to prevent necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in very preterm infants (born at less than 32 weeks gestation). The therapy works by colonizing the neonatal gut to establish a healthy intestinal microbiota, thereby reducing inflammation and preventing the translocation of pathogenic bacteria associated with NEC. It is currently being evaluated in a stepped-wedge cluster randomized trial to assess its efficacy in reducing NEC incidence and improving feeding tolerance in extremely low-birth-weight (ELBW) infants. The formulation aims to sustain beneficial bacterial populations and help infants achieve full enteral feeds sooner.
