Multi-virus specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (multi-VSTs) are an adoptive cellular immunotherapy developed by Nissui Pharmaceutical (now Shimadzu Diagnostics) under an exclusive license from Baylor College of Medicine for the Japanese market. This therapy is designed to treat and prevent life-threatening opportunistic viral infections in immunocompromised patients, particularly those undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The product consists of donor-derived T cells that are expanded ex vivo and sensitized to antigens from five common viruses: Cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), Adenovirus (ADV), BK virus (BKV), and Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6). By infusing these multi-specific T cells, the patient's antiviral immunity is rapidly reconstituted, allowing for the targeted elimination of virus-infected cells while minimizing the risk of graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) typically associated with unmanipulated donor lymphocyte infusions.
