Overview

The multibotanical preparation (Kaiser Permanente) is a complex herbal supplement formulated specifically for the Herbal Alternatives for Menopause (HALT) study. It consists of ten components: black cohosh (50 mg), alfalfa, chaste tree, dong quai, false unicorn, licorice, oats, pomegranate, Siberian ginseng, and boron. Administered as four capsules daily (200 mg total daily dose), the preparation was intended to treat vasomotor symptoms, including hot flashes and night sweats, in peri- and postmenopausal women. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial conducted between 2001 and 2004 involving 351 women aged 45-55 years found that the preparation was no more effective than placebo in reducing symptom frequency or severity. Furthermore, the study demonstrated that the preparation had no significant impact on reproductive hormones, vaginal epithelium, or the endometrium.
