Overview

Multiferon is a multi-subtype, human leukocyte-derived interferon-alpha (IFN-α) preparation. It consists of a natural mixture of several interferon-alpha subtypes produced by human white blood cells (leukocytes) after induction with Sendai virus. Unlike recombinant interferons which consist of a single subtype, Multiferon's natural composition is intended to mimic the body's endogenous response. In the context of multiple sclerosis (MS), it has been investigated as a rescue or alternative therapy for patients who have developed neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) against interferon-beta (IFN-β). By binding to the Type I interferon receptor (IFNAR), Multiferon activates the JAK-STAT signaling pathway, leading to the transcription of interferon-stimulated genes that exert immunomodulatory, antiviral, and antiproliferative effects, potentially reducing the inflammatory activity associated with MS relapses.
