Overview

Multiple electrolyte solution refers to sterile intravenous (IV) fluids containing a balanced mixture of essential electrolytes such as sodium chloride, sodium gluconate or acetate, potassium chloride, and magnesium chloride. These solutions are used as sources of water and electrolytes for patients who require fluid replacement or correction of electrolyte imbalances. They may also serve as alkalinizing agents due to the presence of acetate or gluconate ions that are metabolized to bicarbonate in the body. The mechanism of action is physiological replacement and maintenance of normal plasma electrolyte concentrations and acid-base balance. Common clinical uses include treatment or prevention of dehydration from various causes (e.g., vomiting, diarrhea), perioperative fluid management, and use as a diluent for medications or blood products[4][6][8].
