Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ionosol MB and 5% Dextrose Injection is an intravenous electrolyte and carbohydrate solution developed and marketed by ICU Medical. The formulation is a modified Butler's solution (indicated by the 'MB' designation) containing a hypotonic concentration of multiple electrolytes, including sodium lactate, potassium chloride, magnesium chloride, monobasic potassium phosphate, and monobasic sodium phosphate monohydrate, combined with 5% dextrose monohydrate. It is designed to maintain fluid and electrolyte homeostasis, restore blood glucose levels, and provide calories to reduce the catabolism of endogenous protein reserves. The lactate component provides an alkalizing effect to address acidosis. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of dehydration, acidosis, diarrhea, and burns in infants and children (following an initial priming solution) and for postoperative fluid and electrolyte maintenance therapy in adults.
