Overview

Normosol-R and 5% Dextrose is a sterile, nonpyrogenic solution of balanced electrolytes and dextrose intended for intravenous administration. Manufactured by ICU Medical, it contains a specific blend of sodium chloride, sodium acetate, sodium gluconate, potassium chloride, and magnesium chloride hexahydrate, along with 5% dextrose. The electrolyte profile is designed to approximate the principal ions of normal plasma, providing an isotonic environment with a physiologic sodium-to-chloride ratio. It is primarily indicated for the parenteral replacement of acute extracellular fluid volume losses in clinical settings such as surgery, trauma, burns, or shock. Additionally, it serves as an adjunct for restoring circulatory volume in cases of moderate blood loss and provides a minimal source of carbohydrate calories to help maintain blood glucose levels.
