Multiple electrolytes injection is a sterile, nonpyrogenic, isotonic intravenous crystalloid solution designed for fluid and electrolyte replenishment and as an alkalinizing agent. It is formulated to closely mimic the electrolyte composition, osmolarity, and pH of human physiological plasma. The most common formulation (Type 1, USP, such as Plasma-Lyte A or Normosol-R) contains sodium chloride, sodium gluconate, sodium acetate, potassium chloride, and magnesium chloride, providing key electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride) and bicarbonate precursors (acetate and gluconate) without calcium. Another formulation (Type 2, USP, such as Plasma-Lyte R) includes calcium chloride and sodium lactate. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of acute extracellular fluid volume loss (dehydration, blood loss during surgery) and metabolic acidosis, serving as a priming or diluent solution in surgical and critical care settings.
