Overview

Hawaii Biotech is developing a multivalent recombinant subunit vaccine designed to provide broad protection against mammalian tick-borne flaviviruses (TBFVs). The vaccine candidate is composed of recombinant subunit envelope (E) proteins from three distinct viruses within the TBFV group, produced using the company's proprietary mammalian cell expression system. In preclinical mouse challenge studies, the vaccine has demonstrated cross-protective efficacy against five major mammalian TBFVs, including those that cause Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), Powassan virus disease, and various hemorrhagic fevers (such as Omsk hemorrhagic fever and Kyasanur Forest disease). These pathogens are recognized as Category B or C priority pathogens due to their potential to cause severe neurological or hemorrhagic disease in humans.
