Multivirus-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (mVSTs) are an autologous cell therapy consisting of T cells expanded ex vivo to target multiple viral pathogens simultaneously. In the context of the clinical study by Anhui Provincial Hospital (ChiCTR2200060163), these cells are expanded using specific cytokine culture systems to treat or prevent infections from cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and adenovirus (ADV) in immunocompromised patients, such as those undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The therapy works by restoring the host's cellular immunity against these opportunistic viruses, which can cause significant morbidity and mortality in the absence of a robust T-cell response. The expansion process is designed to produce a polyclonal population of T cells capable of recognizing viral antigens presented on MHC molecules, leading to the targeted destruction of infected cells.
