Overview

Muparfostat (PI-88) is a heparan sulfate mimetic and a complex mixture of sulfated oligosaccharides. It functions primarily as a heparanase inhibitor, which allows it to block angiogenesis, metastasis, and tumor growth. The drug has been investigated for its anti-cancer properties, progressing to Phase III clinical trials, though it was ultimately not approved for this indication. Additionally, Muparfostat has been shown to bind to lipoprotein lipase, which can lead to hyperlipidemia and aggravate hepatic steatosis in obese individuals. It also exhibits antiviral activity against viruses such as herpes simplex virus (HSV) and vaccinia virus (VACV), and has been studied for its potential in hypoxia-induced retinal neovascularization.
