Overview

Muparfostat (PI-88) is a mixture of highly sulfated mannose oligosaccharides derived from yeast. It acts as a heparanase inhibitor and heparan sulfate mimetic with antiangiogenic and antimetastatic properties. Muparfostat inhibits the enzyme heparanase and binds to angiogenic growth factors such as Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and Fibroblast growth factor 1 (FGF-1)/Fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF-2) to block their activity in tumor angiogenesis and metastasis[1][2][5]. Dacarbazine is an alkylating agent used primarily for malignant melanoma and Hodgkin's disease; it works by interfering with DNA replication in cancer cells[6]. The combination has been investigated for advanced melanoma due to potential synergistic effects on tumor growth inhibition.
