Overview

Mupirocin + sodium hypochlorite is a topical combination therapy used primarily for the prevention of peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter-associated infections, including peritonitis and exit site/tunnel infections. Mupirocin is a topical antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by reversibly binding to bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, leading to bacteriostatic or bactericidal effects depending on concentration and exposure time. Sodium hypochlorite acts as an antiseptic/disinfectant by releasing chlorine species that disrupt microbial cell metabolism through oxidation of essential enzymes and proteins. The combination has been shown to significantly reduce infection rates and prolong catheter survival in pediatric PD patients when used as part of daily exit site care[1][4]. Both agents are applied topically; mupirocin targets Gram-positive bacteria (notably Staphylococcus aureus), while sodium hypochlorite provides broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacteria, fungi, and viruses[5][8][10].
