Drug intelligence / Profile preview
mupirocin + sucralfate (marketed under the brand name Sucral MU) is a topical combination ointment developed by Strassenburg Pharmaceuticals for wound healing and the treatment of bacterial skin infections. It contains sucralfate (7% w/w), a cytoprotective agent, and mupirocin (2% w/w), a topical antibiotic. Sucralfate acts locally by polymerizing in acidic or damaged tissue environments to form a protective, adhesive barrier over wounds and ulcers, shielding them from further irritation and promoting tissue regeneration. Mupirocin is a protein synthesis inhibitor that specifically binds to bacterial isoleucine--tRNA ligase (isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase), preventing the incorporation of isoleucine into bacterial proteins and thereby halting bacterial growth. This dual-action formulation is indicated for the treatment of burns, diabetic foot ulcers, bedsores, pyoderma, impetigo, and post-surgical wound care (such as post-caesarean-section and post-gynaecological-surgery care).
